The Mugler’s ATE THAT PERFORMANCE.

It makes me sad (for real) that the only documentation of this crazy, vibrant, life-affirming scene is a shitty hand-held camera video and a 20 year old documentary. I know that gender non-comformity + person of colour + poor = marginalized x 1000, but REALLY. Can someone PLEASE get these kids a Jersey Shore-esque reality show? I want to know everything about them!

i don’t know when the dream started recording straight from my brain….don’t know, don’t care

oh daphne guinness, you and your custom natacha marro shoes and endless mcqueen and upward facing dog are surely the business.

Poontraub Versus Paris: i have beef with the idea of resort/cruise collections. yes, beef.

poontraubversusparis:

first i should point out that i do not dislike the clothes shown in resort/cruise. a lot of designers showcase some truly beautiful work in this mini-season. I just really dislike the idea of resort/cruise and i guess the same can be said of pre-fall.

for those who do not know, resort/cruise (…

it’s funny because that’s exactly what cruise as a “season” was for. old money escaping the dirty city for a few months around christmas. most people accurately refer to it as pre-spring now in retail. the fashion calendar is so beyond weird. you have pre-spring/resort/cruise which ships november-january and consists of traditionally vacation-y items and lightweight but still appropriate basics (buy now, wear now!) then you have spring which ships january-april and is a diffused and expanded version of the runway collection, and then runway ships april-may and then BAM you go on sale in june/july. same thing for pre-fall/fall/runway. pre collections are becoming increasingly more important for retailers as they are typically more restrained and therefore more wearable, often do not feature a lot of the time consuming and $$$$ techniques that runway collections do and are on the sales floor for months and months with more time to sell versus runway which has like 6-8 weeks before sale hits. most retailers set aside a large portion of their budget for pre collections. runway generates ideas which generates press which drives traffic into the shop where a client will buy a piece from a pre-collection because it’s less expensive, easier to wear and not featured in every magazine thus creating over-exposure. it’s all a game!

name dropping luxury labels is so expected in rap that it’s now become a contest to see who can work the most avant or edgy label into a verse. kanye tossing around phoebe philo, jay-z butchering the pronunciation of maison martin margiela and nicki’s posthumous mcqueen send up might seem directional to rap fans…or 14 yo kids, but to supercilious fashion people (which might include myself) it’s just tired and side-eye inducing. but i seriously bug-eyed when i heard lore’l christen herself a ‘villain in van herpen’ cause that THAT is some next level shit.

the new music video for Nicola Roberts’ single “Beat of my Drum”. Pretty fun! Her hair looks like a bad wig though. #truthhurts

Thanks, Andrew! I was going to look for the video when I got home. This song is really one of the best of the year.

Somehow my least favourite Girl has made my favourite post GA solo effort. She still has zero personality though….

My beautiful two-spirit filmmaking bestie on the new Bey…

So I just watched ‘Run the World’ by Beyonce. WONDERFUL and…so timely. I just shot the one of the most pivotal scenes of the Tsuut’ina Resistance film, and according to a true story, it was the far-spanning, wisdom, razor sharp intuition and unflinching leadership of Chief Bullheads Main wife that prevented a full fledged massacre…Really, if it was not for her using her voice and intelligence to urge Bullhead to reconsider going to war, I seriously doubt we would be the Tsuut’ina we are today.‎WHO RUN THE WORLD? GIRLS. WHO WON THE WORLD? GIRLS. Quite literally for us Tsuut’ina, it was Bullhead’s wife…MY PERSUASION CAN BUILD A NATION, AND WITH THIS POWER, OUR LOVE CAN DEVOUR. AND TSUUT’INA WOMEN. THIS STORY IS ABOUT HOW YOUR PERSPECTIVE SAVED OUR LIFEBLOOD. BE PROUD. AS NATIVES, MORE THAN MOST OTHER PEOPLES, KNEW THAT WOMEN WERE THE EQAULS TO MEN AND HELD THE OTHER HALF TO BALANCE. PROFOUNDLY SO. LOVE YOU I’M CRYING. Robin…..as you Bullhead’s wife…you are the Beyonce of Tsuut’ina ;) xxxxxx goodnight people. I have to sleep to shoot the rest of this awesome film.

Yeah, not interested in feminism that maintains a dominant, post-colonial ideology and refuses to acknowledge the ways in which women fuck with and create their own unique power.

i’m all for critiques of lazy liberal feminism and this is a great one, but…it just seems so misguided or misdirected. i totally read the song as more of a The Secret/hesi positive affirmation thing (my persuasion can build a nation) than as actual cold hard facts, because, DUH.

But feminism has never really given B her due. she’s too invested in late capitalist feministing and her actuality is probably just off-putting. all that vulnerability, confusion, paranoia, rage, desperation, ego et al. is too subtle and nuanced for a contemporary feminist analysis especially when you bring her race and class into play.

and i hate to be all early ’90s riot grrrl FIGHT THE REAL ENEMY but, for reals? Beyonce writhing around in Pucci in the desert is hardly worthy of this sort of vitriol.
